Habitat Recovery

Biodiversity Rescue and Propagation Group

What is the Willie Wagtails HR?

The Willie Wagtails’ Habitat Recovery (WW HR) is a propagation nursery run by volunteers who grow indigenous plants with the specific purpose of revitalising the biodiversity of the local area.

We look at the birdlife that has disappeared and propagate plants that are specific to their eating, shelter or nesting requirements. This can be done in local parks, reserves and, above all, home gardens.

What are our aims?

Our overriding aim is to restore the lost biodiversity of our area through the targeted propagation of plants that will most help locally lost or endangered species. According to the birds’ needs we grow plants that provide the food (insects and nectar), preferred habitat (protective plants) and which address other limiting factors.

  • Increase shelter for native birds by providing safe escape routes, perches and nesting opportunities.

  • Increase food for native birds through the supply of plants that attract insects such as butterflies and other invertebrates.

  • Grow plants that are now rare in the Glen Eira area but which were once numerous.

  • Introduce residents to the beauty of our local native plants to help them rediscover native birdlife.

  • Replenish our gardens and reserves with their original flora.

  • Support other groups involved in revegetation and maintenance of local biodiversity.

What plants do we propagate?

While there are many hundreds of plants that are indigenous to the area, Willie Wagtails HR concentrates on a small number of plants that are key to re-establishing the natural biodiversity. All of these plants are suitable for household gardens, parks and reserves. They bear the twin attraction of being attractive in their own right, plus highly attractive to birds and insects.

Willie Wagtails HR grows plants for:

  • Members

  • Home gardeners

  • Local schools

  • Various environmental groups

  • Landscapers

  • Local councils
